Boy Howdy!  Is this ever a national day to remember, it’s National Pack Rat Day, how about that!?!  If there was ever a pack rat it is me.  I save almost everything and if I ever decide to toss it out, I’m down to Home Depot buying another very soon.

You know what I’m talking about, “good stuff”.  That piece of shiney metal that surrounds a shower head or the extension hose from the sink sprayer with a still good sprayer end.  The 12 volt water pump you know will only take a minute to get working again.  A perfectly good metal coffee can with the plastic lid.  The aluminum pan you cooked last Thanksgivings turkey in.  The old frayed rope from the flag pole.  Metal grate from the defunct bbq grill or the end of the old twisted garden hose.

I have a garage full of these good things and there are more.  Half a can of screws that came from an old camping trailer and all the light covers from the same.  Not to mention the handles from the cabinet drawers inside.  These are good things!  How could anyone toss them in the trash?  Do any of you need some of these things?  I have them and they are free to you!

How about out in the shed?  Yes, big items like shovel heads and spades with broken handles still inside.  Perfectly good if they just had new handles.

And there are some things that are around just because “Dad” used it.  It’s totally broken, but how can you throw it away?  Pa bought it and wore it out, hung it up because he knew he could fix it someday, but someday never came around…so there it hangs.  Sort of a priceless thing if you know what I mean.  And in the other corner is a atv sprayer tank that will hold 20 gallons of spray…ya it has a small hole in one corner from a leaking mounting bolt, but dang it’s almost like new.  Someday I’ll fix it.

How about you?  Are you a pack rat?  Today would be a great day to have a garage sale and try to get rid of some of the pack rat stuff.  If everyone who is a pack rat had a garage sale perhaps we could all get together at a common location and have a giant happening sale.  National Pack Rat Sale Day!

Anyway, take the screws out of that old toaster before you throw the rest into the metal salvage bin.

Well it’s that time of year to expect the expected!  Watch your credit card balances on line.  The DWR are beginning to hit the credit cards for the permits you applied for back in February.

Did I draw a moose tag?  Did I draw a muzzy deer tag?  How about my LE elk?

My wife says it would not be a good time for any of the biggies to be hit right now…OUCH!  You just watch…this is the time it will happen…anyone want to buy a boat?  HA HA!

Good luck to all!

WOOOHOOOOO!!!!  UPS just delivered my new muzzleloader sights!  Just in time to install and sight in before rendezvous!  Look out fellas!  All the prizes will be coming my way.

The only way it could be better is if there was some sort of Gyro that held my rifle more solid.  But, I will behave myself and not have a heavy beating heart when on the line.

How good are you at spotting game?  Can you see any turkeys in this picture?  Can you see a Gobbler in the picture?

Maybe this will make it easier!

We live in a wonderful world!

This is the second weekend of the guided youth turkey hunt and I’m just as excited as I was last weekend.  The only difference is I know a little bit more about what I’m supposed to do.

Some of those who were there last weekend helping out will not be there this weekend, which is a bit of a disappointment for me, but they have other commitments and that is fine.

Four more lucky young hunters will be in for a treat of a lifetime and I can hardly wait.  Hopefully the turkeys have settled down a bit from the harassment we dealt them last weekend and will be ready to meet their maker.

What a blast!  This weekend will find my grandson Conner and his dad “The Weasel” among the lucky ones.  I hope all the kids get a chance at a bird.  It’s a long shot to have that happen even with all the help.  But if the young hunters stay with the task at hand and don’t give up, they have a really good chance to pull the trigger on a big old tom.

Bring it on!  Thanks once again to the United Wildlife Cooperative organization  and R&K Hunting Company for pulling this off for these lucky kids.

I’ll have more about this weekend up when we get back and I’ll bet I will post something more about this on here in the morning.  Excited?  Who’s Excited?  ME!

Heading out in the morning at 4 a.m. to try and bag a turkey.  Me and the Weasel will be putting our wit against the character of the wild bird.  We can do it.

We have a bird that is serious about finding love and we will “pretend” to be his lover.  All stops are off and that bad boy is in trouble.

Yelp, Yelp, Yelp!  Gobble, Gobble, Gobble…………BANG!

Hopefully pictures will be available when this all comes to be.

For the past several years I have noticed what appears to be a trend and it is getting more and more prevalent all the time.  Notice the socks people are wearing.  All striped in different colors, mostly around the leg rather than up and down.  They are kind of cool.  Not that I would wear them unless they were worn totally hidden from view.

A couple of months ago I attended a new products show in SLC  and I noticed many vendors selling those type of socks.  So it just reaffirmed my suspicions from several years back when I first noticed them.

Well, today is National Lost Sock Memorial Day!  Happy Lost Sock to you my friend!  My drawer has a couple of single socks in it and I keep hoping the other one will pop out of the dryer.  One has been a lonely sock for over a year now, poor thing, it just lays there in the same spot, patiently waiting for the dryer to give up the mate.  Sorry buddy, it ain’t gonna happen.

But, why have I not tossed it away?  There must be a reason, but I have not thought of it yet.  UNLESS, we celebrate National Lost Sock Day, by wearing the miss matched single socks we have in our drawers!  YES!  That is the answer!  Who cares if one sock is black and the other is brown?  NO BODY!  That’s who.  Actually, if you think about it, (my wife does all the laundry at my house, because of my wanting to be helpful when we were first married and all our underwear came out with a pinkish tint) it would save considerable time not having to sort and fold the socks, just toss them into the drawer!  You would even be able to grab your socks without turning on a light and waking your better half while getting dressed in the morning!

Better yet, if we all purchased those striped kind it would be very fashionable if you did have un matched pairs on.  I really like the idea.

So, I’m going to change my socks right now and put those “almost new” pair of miss-matched socks on to celebrate today’s national holiday.  Happy holiday to you all!

OH BOY!  I can hardly wait for tomorrow to arrive.  The Weasel and I have plans to go turkey hunting in a secret spot and we have never hunted there before.  Our hopes are high, as usual.  We have heard good things about this area and are planning an almost all day of hunting.  I have to be back in time to clean up before a VERY BIG MEETING tomorrow evening.

The most exciting thing about tomorrow is the National Holiday name!  It fits right in with both of us getting our tags filled.

In my mind I see at least two toms all strutting and showing their tails to the ladies and dancing like crazy birds will do.  Weasel and I are hunkered near by in the brush with our shotguns pointed at them two birds.  We have already made the decision to both fire on the count of three.

One!  I’m aiming at the one on the left and he the one on the right.  As they come around in their dance, Two!    And then both of them stretch out their necks and give a big old gobble…Three!  FIRE!  BOOM!  Two guns going off with the report of only one!

Of course both birds are down for the count and we are high fiving and having our own party.

That’s right tomorrow is National FIRE Day!  Enjoy!

Today seems to be a real good day for me to post things up on this site.  I hope some of you can use the information being posted.  This one will help all of those who go off into the woods hunting, hiking or whatever and spend the night.

I ran across the word “Fladry” the other day.  I had no clue as to the meaning and so I wrote it down to look it up later.  Well, today is later.

Wikipedia seems to be my go to site for definitions and this one really is a good one.

Fladry is a line of rope mounted along the top of a fence, from which are suspended strips of fabric or colored flags that will flap in a breeze, intended to deter wolves from crossing the fence-line.[1] Fladry lines have been used for this purpose for several centuries, traditionally for hunting wolves in Eastern Europe.[1] They are effective temporarily, as the novelty may soon wear off, and can be used to protect livestock in small pastures from wolves.

So, just remember to take a few lines of fencing material with you when you go out on your hunt.  When it comes time to pitch your tent, put up the fence first.  That way you know your boundaries and the wolves watching you from a distance will get readily discouraged and go seek someone else to heckle for that night.

If you find you have forgotten flagging materials, just rip up your red flannel underwear into strips and tie them on.  If you paid any attention to my daily trapping stories, you could buy yourself some of those “clippies” and fix yourself up some pre made flags for your outing.  Nothing better than “being prepared”.  (That reminds me of another story I’m working on to post up sometime in the future).

The other day I was talking with my buddy Muskrat about the friends of the NRA banquet that is coming up in May.  We talked about a lot of things and he said that a lot of people call him lucky because he wins so many guns and things from those banquets.  He said it doesn’t hurt to buy a whole lot of tickets for those drawings to up your odds.  And he is right.  If you shoot enough times at something you are bound to hit it eventually.

Occasionally a person can just purchase one ticket for a drawing and have it be the lucky one drawn, but more often than not, it won’t happen that way.

Recently, a local wildlife group called the United Wildlife Cooperative,

http://www.unitedwildlifecooperative.org/_WELCOME.html

were offered six fully guided and furnished turkey hunts for six lucky youth hunters.  The UWC spent countless hours marketing those six tags and took donations of $20 for each ticket in the bucket.  I heard they sold something like 80 tickets.  The drawing took place and they announced the lucky winners names “slowly” throughout one day on their Facebook page.  All except the last name.  They held out on that one until they had over 400 likes on their Facebook page, or Adam Eakles “Roughing it Outdoors” show that was aired on KSL, April 28, whichever came first.

They also were donated a bunch of other prizes to be given away to the youth that didn’t get lucky enough to draw a turkey hunt and one of those prizes was a Mossberg Bantam 500 shotgun!  Other prizes included turkey calls, decoys and other assorted turkey hunting related items.

What a fun thing for them to do for some lucky youth hunters!  I commend them and those who donated the prizes!  Thank you sincerely from me.

The winners of prizes were Brian Robbins, Preston Vorhees, Terry Cunningham, Tanner Gagnard, Amy Barton and Solomon Dittmar.

Winners of the guided turkey hunts are:  Cody McNicol, Michael Christensen, Morgan Keel, Kaytlin White, Dustyn Woodard  and my very own Grandson, Conner Zundel!

The turkey hunts will be split between two different weekends in May, the first being May 4-6 the second May 11-13.  Three days, two nights.  The kids will be accompanied by one adult, either a parent or guardian.  They will sleep in tent accommodations for the two nights and meals will be provided (I would expect dutch oven meals).  There will be lessons given on turkey habits, calling techniques, hunting the wiley birds etc.  They say there will even be some live entertainment!  What a wonderful event.  Also, the local TV show called “Roughing it Outdoors”, with Adam Eakle will be there to video  some of the happenings and it will air on the show sometime this year.

Thank you all once again for offering this wonderful event and I sure hope you made a bunch of money doing it.  To the outfitters who will be guiding these youngsters, a special thanks to all of you.  And to the other sponsors, it’s just not that easy of a thing to do and I commend you as well.  Thank you!

A special GOOD LUCK to the lucky winners of the turkey hunts!  May the turkey Gods smile on you all with 10 inch beards and inch and a half spurs!

Maybe some of you will even see one of these special dream catchers come your way!
