Tomorrow is election day and that got me thinking about liquor laws across the nation.  Back in the day, in order for some politicians to get elected, they would pay for someone’s drink if they would vote for them.  Again back in the day, I read where George Washington’s entire campaign budget was spent on booze for all those who would vote for him.  This got to be quite a big deal and so, as a result, laws were enacted to prohibit the sale of any kind of booze during election days.  Since that time, of course we have become much more civilized and controlled.  I say that with tongue in cheek of course.

As a result of my thoughts I went on the internet and have found that there is only one state in the Nation that still bans the sale of alcohol on election day…..South Carolina.

So, the folks in South Carolina have voiced their concerns on this matter and wish to have it rescinded so they can be like all the other folks in the nation, however, just like anything else, the pros have their cons to deal with.  Give and take.  One of the state congressmen posted up a bill that would rescind the law and make liquor sales legal on election day….it went to committee and when it came back out, the committee was all in favor of it, with this condition…..sales during Christmas would be halted!  WHAT????

When you look at it, National elections happen every two years, but Christmas comes EVERY year!  What would that do for liquor sales?  We all know that liquor sales is a very big deal during the Christmas holiday season!  And we can also assume that the liquor sales on an election day Tuesday would be much less in volume.  I’d even bet that Tuesday sales are one of the lowest sales days of the week across the board.  So, to trade liquor sales on election day for the loss of liquor sales on Christmas just ain’t gonna cut it.

Well, I’m just glad I don’t live in South Carolina otherwise I’d have to go out and hit the store for some booze today.

Don’t forget to get out and vote tomorrow.  Right, wrong or indifferent….If you don’t vote, don’t bitch about who gets in or what they do while in office….you ain’t got no voice in it if you don’t vote.
